Message You need to get some autofrost. It contains a mixture of refrigerants that provide the correct amount of lubrication for your compressor and will actually perform better than R-12. Since R-134 is much less efficient, car manufacturers have compensated by using larger condensors etc. R-134 will not work very well in a R-12 system even when it's converted. My father's 1992 honda accord which is converted to R-134 blows air from the vents at 43+/- degrees while a properly working R-12 or autofrost system will typically work at 34+/- degrees. My Z with original R-12 runs at about 34 degrees.

There is nothing special about R-134. It's a refrigerant like autofrost. The main difference is that through lobbying it has become the defacto standard. It's also less efficient in car applications.

I would recommend other options like Hot Shot, but Autofrost was the first R-12 replacement and the company has secured rights to its mixture of refrigerants. It seems to be the best option out there now.
